Linux – Why I Did Not Learn Beyond Basics?

I thank Tracy Boggiano (b|t) for hosting T-SQL Tuesday #116 . Topic for this month is SQL on Linux. I also want to acknowledge Adam Machanic’s vision behind this project. I learned a lot from some of the #TSQL Tuesday’s and participated in few.
I personally do not use SQL Server on Linux today. Does not mean that I will not be using the same in near future. I did not use any could platform even 3 years ago, and now I spent more than 50% of my time using Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.
Some of my attempts of learning Linux and even Oracle database system includes:
- Buying a book ‘Oracle Database Administration for Microsoft SQL Server DBAs’ by Michelle Malcher
- Attending 5 days of Linux Training
- Buying Linux Certification Study Guide
- Attending official Oracle Database course ‘Oracle Database 12c R2: Administration Workshop Ed 3’
I am also reading, listening and doing very little tests with containers. I was optimistic (in my subconscious mind) that Windows Container will get more traction and I might be able to ride on that. After reading One of the article ‘The Differences Between Linux and Windows Containers’ I understood clearly why Linux will dominate over Windows when it comes to Containers.
Why my attempts of learning Linux beyond basics did not work so far? As I hold a full time job, supporting companies business is my primary responsibility. Unless there is a business case at my company to use containers or SQL Server on Linux it will not be easy for me to learn. That being said I am trying to educate myself on containers and make a case where these new technologies can help business. Once I can demonstrate the value, learning and using Linux will be lot easier for me.
